What is loss control?
Loss control is the ability to identify the potential for loss to occur at a particular property or business. It starts with common sense and then uses information developed through past losses to enable an insurer to predict or foresee potential claims against the policy and encompasses every line of insurance written today. Loss control is a very specialized business utilizing many technical references as a guide. Once knowledgeable, the field person can be a highly effective tool to reduce the severity or eliminate losses or meet regulatory requirements and this ultimately improves the profitability of the insurance company.

Why learn Loss Control?
Each year, several million commercial insurance policies are issued nationwide. Many Insurance companies, Agents and Brokers require that a loss control survey be performed to evaluate the insurability of the property or business that they underwrite. These same companies have limited loss control field staff and geographic distribution and they outsource a significant number of their field surveys throughout the country. It has been nearly a decade since the insurance industry has placed full emphasis on training entry level field staff and there are very few ways to actually learn loss control. Only a handful of colleges and universities offer degrees that are relevant in fire protection engineering or safety management but these courses are very time consuming and expensive. This translates into a shortage of knowledgeable and dependable field staff within the industry. We offer the most cost effective opportunity to start a new direction in life.

What can we teach you?
Our team of instructors have backgrounds as experienced senior loss control consultants many of whom are degreed in fire protection engineering. We utilize the latest information from the three most critical sources which are ISO (Insurance Service Office), AM Best’s loss control engineering guides and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association). We have broken down the curriculum into two sessions lasting four to five days each. We will instruct you on the basics of property and casualty insurance. We will also instruct you how to make recommendations to the underwriters regarding potential exposures. You will be able to get started in your career after just the first seminar.

What could I expect to earn?
Most independent loss control consultants earn $25 per hour to start and with more knowledge, even higher pay. Most consultants that are willing to apply themselves earn between $50,000 and $100,000 a year and have the luxury to be their own boss. Those individuals seeking part time work can enjoy the freedom to work as little or as much as they desire.

Do I need any kind of background to enroll?
No experience or college degree is necessary because we start with the basics. Those who have some experience can benefit from the advanced seminars to further their ability. We break down the information into easy to understand sections as we build the foundation blocks of your technical ability. An open and rested mind is all you need.

How do I get started?
Your success is important to us so we do most of the work for you. We help you make the necessary contacts by providing you an access point to a directory of companies seeking loss control consultants. We also direct you to the various field service organizations that allow you to advertise your availability. During your seminars you will also receive several training manuals to reference after you finish the course as these will become the start of your technical library.
